On Driving and Cell Phones

Again it's over and over, all this talk about prohibition, and not one word on free enterprise and education.  Now we all know the police, fire dept, taxid, and CDL drivers all use two way radios and are trained to do so, in some degree.  so instead of banning talking while driving why not require the drivers to get an endorsement on their liciense that shows they have been trained to operate a vehicle with one hand. Hey the handicapped are driving with one arm, leg, and some are visually impaired and driving with glasses to see with.

We should have made it the law for all drivers to train on a stick shift(manual transmission) a long time ago. We didn't  because most people in the 50's and 60's had some experience already. Just think of the jobs that will b e created teaching people how to drive and talk with one hand ( the left hand) on the wheel. You can always spot the "rube" when you see them holding the cell phone in their left hand while driving. Why not and all emcompassing endorsement that permits you to drive a stick shift car, and talk on two way radios and cell phones?

  • I've had exactly the same first two experiences - golf and batting - but, perhaps unfortunately, I've never broken anything, so was never forced to learn to write right-handed and I am abominable at it.  My father was supposed to be left-handed, but my grandparents forced his hand, buying into the whole left-handed sinister thing.  He regretted it all his life.  When I came along and they tried to convince Dad he should change me, he told them to leave me be.  I don't ever recall being hugged by my paternal grandparents, now long-gone.  At my death, I don't suppose they will be on hand, ready to greet me.

  • Yep, I'm a lefty and know what you mean. I guess we lefties are trained a bit to be ambidex's, for awhile I could play golf with right handed clubs(didn't have any left clubs at some places back in the 60's). I also learned to bat baseballs both ways, and when I broke my left thumb I learned to write with the other hand for one month.

  • Being left-handed, I had to educate that weaker right hand to run my manual transmission through the paces - trained first on a VW bug.  Yep, it was a good education.  But the only advantage I had as a youth was if I took my dad's car on a date - an automatic on the steering column - so my girlfriend could sit right next to me instead of separated by the center console of my GTO.
